ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming Fire Department made short work of a fire in a structure near an apartment building, caused by an apparent lightning strike.
According to a written statement released by department personnel, Ishpeming firefighters were dispatched to 257 Hill St., at about 5:48 p.m. Thursday after neighbors reported observing a lightning strike to a tree near an out building.
A short time later, the out building was seen on fire and Marquette County Central Dispatch was called, the statement details. Additionally, one private resident from the nearby apartment building was notified.
The department, responding with two trucks and 21 firefighters, found the structure fully engulfed in flames but were able to bring the blaze under control within several minutes after arriving on the scene. The building, however, was declared a total loss.
Firefighters remained on the scene for about one hour, mopping up remaining hot spots.
There were no injuries reported.
