Leslie J. Kallioinen

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI. – Leslie John Kallioinen, 89, of 31 W. Jarvi Road, Negaunee Township, died at 4:00 AM on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the Eastwood Nursing Center.

Leslie was born June 12, 1924 in Palmer to John A. and J. Dagmar (Larson) Kallioinen, was a graduate of Negaunee High School, Class of 1942 and was a lifelong area resident. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWll having served in the South Pacific theater of operations. He was employed by Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co. for 38 years, retiring as a kiln operator in 1986.

Mr. Kallioinen was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee and was a life member of the V.A. Romo Post #3165 V.F.W. of Negaunee. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, bird watching, and picking blueberries. Other activities included reading, bowling, horseshoes, and an occasional trip to the casino.

Surviving are his wife Irja K. (Jarvi) whom he married on February 21, 1948, 2 daughters: Sandra Louise (Tom) Gauthier of Powers, Audrey Denise Heater of Sterling, VA, 4 sons: John Leslie Kallioinen and James Bruce (Kathy) Kallioinen, both of Negaunee, Alan Frank Kallioinen of Redway, CA, Larry Stephen Kallioinen of Negaunee, 7 grandchildren: Jesse (Amy) Kallioinen, Chad (Bree Ruesing)Kallioinen, Elisa (Russell) Card, Tashina (David Bellomy) Kallioinen, Todd (Elizabeth Raisanen) Gauthier, Brian Gauthier, Dylan (Kristin) Kallioinen, 9 great grandchildren: Russell, Evan, and Soren Card, Jacob, Brynn and Kaitlyn Kallioinen, Grace, Aliyah and Augustine Kallioinen, Avery and Luca Bellomy, and Hanna Kallioinen, one sister, Marjorie Bantle of Kingsford, 1 brother, Stanley (Nancy) Kallioinen of Suomi Location, 2 sisters-in-law: Aino Uren and Ruth (Jacob) Winter, numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Arthur, a brother Kenneth, 2 sisters: Helen Kallioinen and Katherine Rudis.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 noon on Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Negaunee with Rev. Marcia Solberg officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00 AM until noon prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Interment will be in Bakkala Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or a charity of choice in Leslie’s memory.
