Dorothy A. Madigan
MARQUETTE, MI. – Dorothy A. Madigan, age 93 former lifelong Marquette resident, entered eternal life on Wednesday morning, June 19, 2013, at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.
Born December 7, 1919 in Champion, a daughter of John and Selina M. (DeRoche) Deerie, Dorothy was raised in Champion until the age of 10 when her family moved to Marquette. She was a 1938 graduate of the Graveraet High School.
In 1941, Dorothy married Lawrence Remillard and the couple established their home in Marquette. Dorothy worked at Remillard’s Tavern while Lawrence served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, and upon his return in 1946, the couple built a home on Grove Street. As a young wife, mother, and homemaker, Dorothy was also employed outside the home as a sales lady with several businesses throughout the years. Possessing a pleasing personality and a gift to gab, her sales career included J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, and Jeanne’s Campus Fashions.
Lawrence preceded her in death in 1969 and she later married James Madigan in 1971. Together, Jim and Dorothy owned and operated Madigan’s Decorating Center on North Third Street for several years, and at its beginning, were among the first in Marquette to stock wallpaper for their clients.
Jim preceded her in death. In her leisure, Dorothy enjoyed painting, utilizing several mediums, oil, acrylic, and water colors. She also was an accomplished seamstress who shared her gift with making the drapes for the Kaufmann Auditorium. Dorothy enjoyed playing cards and gardening. Her memberships included the American Legion Auxiliary, Sociable Seniors, and the Rosettes Group of the Red Hat Society. She was also a former member of the Elks.
Survivors include her children, Elizabeth Ann (Arthur) Westergard of Hookerton, NC and Robert Lawrence Remillard of Skandia; two grandchildren, Peter (Suzanne) Westergard and Kimberly Westergard-Bundy; great-granddaughters, Tatum Westergard-Bundy, Elizabeth and Averie Westergard; her sister, Kathleen (Jack) Specker of Marquette; sister-in-law, Muriel Derrie of Wisconsin; seven nieces and nephews, and several cousins.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Lawrence and James, Dorothy was preceded in death by a step-daughter, Colleen Madigan; sister, Jean Specker; and brother, Robert Derrie.
Friends may call at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Monday June 24, 2013 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11:00 am with Rev. Larry Van Damme officiating. A reception will follow in the Swanson-Lundquist Reception Room. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
