Prep basketball: Jeff Olson named head boys basketball coach at Ishpeming

ISHPEMING – Jeff Olson has been named the new head boys varsity basketball coach at Ishpeming High School, according to IHS athletic director Terry Roberts.

Olson, whose hire was approved Monday by the school board, is also the IHS head varsity football coach having guided the Hematites to an MHSAA Division 7 state football championship in November and state runner-up finish in 2010.

The fall 2013 season will be Olson’s 22nd at the head of the IHS football program, having gone 144-78 with 11-straight playoff appearances.

Olson’s no stranger to basketball, however, having coached both the IHS junior varsity and freshmen teams in recent years.

Olson played point guard in high school for the Marquette Redmen and holds one of the school’s oldest existing records of 161 assists during the 1980-81 season.

At MSHS, Olson was an All-U.P. selection in both basketball and football.

“I always thought I wanted to be a basketball coach,” Olson said in an interview with The Mining Journal on Nov. 19 about his high school days at Marquette Senior High School. “Then Marquette came along and hired me to be the JV (football) offensive coordinator.”

Olson replaces John Tiziani, resigned in April after three seasons at the Hematites’ helm. He compiled a 40-24 record.
