Helen Jean (Gustavson) Swanson

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Helen Jean (Gustavson) Swanson, RN, 98, of Marquette, passed away May 13, 2013 after being a resident of Norlite Nursing Center for three weeks.

She was born February 7, 1915 in Palmer, grew up in Diorite, and was a Marquette resident since 1942. At 98, she was living in her home until shortly before her death.

Helen was a 1932 graduate of Ishpeming High School and a 1937 graduate of the South Shore Hospital School of Nursing, Chicago, Illinois. She worked as a registered nurse at Morgan Heights Tuberculosis Sanatorium and St. Luke’s Hospital (now Marquette General Hospital), both in Marquette.

On January 24, 1942 she married Maxwell O. Swanson who preceded her in death July 2002. Also preceding her in death were her parents Clara (Carlson) and Charles Gustavson, and her two best friends, sisters Margaret Mullins and Charlotte Lehtinen.

She is survived by sons Charles (Bonnie), Robert (Crystal), two grandsons Aaron and Wesly (Joy), a granddaughter Amanda and a great grandson Max, all of Marquette.

In addition, she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and her good friend Joyce Peterson.

Helen had many interests – everything from gardening to fishing to sewing. She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church Quilting Group for 50-plus years). She was also a member of the Elba Morse Nurses Club. Helen was extremely proud of the many ribbons she was awarded from various fairs and craft shows for her sewing, knitting, crocheting, Christmas decorations and cooking.

Assisting others was a natural thing to do for Helen and she took great pride in providing assistance to friends and relatives as they became older. She spent over 98 years being an outstanding role model and having a positive impact on others.

A memorial service will be held at the Messiah Lutheran Church on Friday, June 14 at 11:00 a.m. The family will greet relatives and friends from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Rev. David Van Kley and Rev. Amanda Kossow will officiate and burial will be made in the Park Cemetery.
