Penny wise?

To the Journal editor:

Mr. Hudson congratulates the voters of Ely Township for their “good sense” by defeating a .2 mill/year increase to fund the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.

He appears to believe that only users should pay the cost of the trail and because some residents don’t use the trail, no Ely resident’s taxes should be used to support it.

If that same principle applied to parks, libraries, youth ball fields, senior citizen centers, one might wonder if these facilities would even exist.

The government funds a lot of things that we don’t all personally benefit from. We rebuke the value of greater good when we advocate that all of the government’s actions must benefit ME personally.

The existence of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail adds value to our communities by promoting both fitness and tourism.

That’s good cents.
