Kiwanis name April Athletes of the Month
MARQUETTE – The Superiorland Kiwanis honored its Marquette Senior High School male and female athletes of the month for April at its latest morning breakfast meeting, naming Courtney LaFreniere of the softball team and Andrew Banitt of the track team as athletes of the month.
As a senior at MSHS, LaFreniere is competing in her final season on the varsity girls softball team. In her four years she has been named to the all-district and the all-regional teams, in addition to being named honorable mention all-state. LaFrienere keeps busy outside of the softball season playing basketball for the Redettes where she earned all-defensive team honors as well as second-team all-conference. As a freshmen, LaFreniere ran track for Marquette before choosing to concentrate on softball.
LaFreniere has a 3.9 grade point average and earned outstanding academic achievement each semester at MSHS.
In the offseason, LaFreniere volunteers at the Janzen House, helping coach area youth at basketball camps and softball camps and has spent time helping with the beautification program in Marquette.
Future plans for LaFreniere include attending Northern Michigan University to pursue a career in athletic training.
LaFreniere is coached by MSHS softball coach Paul Seibert and is the daughter of Mark and Shannon LaFreniere.
Male athlete of the month Banitt is currently running track for MSHS, but also plays midfielder for the varsity boys soccer team and was a point guard for the JV basketball team. As a member of the track team in 2012, Banitt was the 800 meter run champion at the U.P. Finals. He continues his winning ways this season as the top 800 runner for Marquette in addition to running in the 3,200 meter relay and 1,600 meter relay.
Banitt has a 3.9 grade point average and has been awarded outstanding academic achievement for his three semesters at MSHS.
Banitt is a member of the band at Marquette and is a referee for the Superiorland Soccer Association.
As a sophomore, Banitt is still undecided on his plans after high school, but he is interested in science and engineering.
Andrew is coached by head boys track coach Kyle Detmers and is the son of Jon and Inga Banitt.
