Alice Georgianna Lindberg

SKANDIA, Mich. – Alice Georgianna Lindberg, age 91, of 701 S. Carlshend Road, Skandia, passed on gently into eternal life Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at home, surrounded by her loving family and the caring staff of UP Home Health and Hospice.

Alice was born in Gwinn on November 18, 1921 to Stanley and Tillie (Paulson) Holly and was a lifelong Skandia area resident. Growing up as part of the “Greatest Generation”, hard work and sacrifice were a way of life. She lived life to the fullest, cherishing her beautiful flower gardens, which she tended to tirelessly. She also reaped the benefits of her vegetable gardens by canning delicious fruits and vegetables, generously contributing them to her many friends, family, church functions, and bazaars, along with her “locally famous” breads, coffee breads, cookies, and cakes.

Alice was proud of the fact that she got her high school diploma later in life through the Gwinn Adult Education Program. She was a stay at home mom who spent most of her time raising her children and any other child who walked through her door. She also served as the Assistant Postmistress at the Carlshend Post Office. After her children left home she worked as a housekeeper for several families, who became life long friends.

Even though two separate strokes had robbed her of her speech for many years, her undying spirit and love of life allowed her to continue to pursue her favorite activities. She was a member of the Skandia Lioness Club, the Carlshend Ladies Aid. She continued to play cards with her many friends, and participate in scrabble, which was her favorite game to play with her family. Earlier in her life, as a 4-H Club Leader she taught sewing and many other skills to her 4-H members.

Alice is survived by her children, Steve (Paulette) Lindberg of Marquette, Holly (John) Richardson of San Diego, CA, Bonnie Lindberg and Stan Lindberg of Carlshend; grandson, Tim (Mary) Bullock of Marquette; two great-grandchildren, Nicole (Derrick) Allen and Matthew Bullock; great great-grand daughters, Payton and Macie; special great-grandchildren, Ben and Nathan Barnhardt; sister-in-law, Ann Holly; many nieces and nephews; along with special niece, Jill (Dean) Paulus; and canine companion, Skully.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ben; and brother, George Holly. The family will receive relatives and friends at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Skandia on Friday, May 31, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 noon. Rev. Tamra Harder will preside. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Skandia-West Branch First Responders, 231 M-94 West, Skandia, MI 49885 or UPAWS (Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter), P.O. Box 968, Marquette, MI 49855; or Habitat for Humanity, 1027 N. Third Street, Marquette, MI 49855.
