MHSAA Div. 2 girls golf: Iron Mountain girls dominate Oak Crest Golf Course
NORWAY – Iron Mountain, behind career-best rounds from Katelynn Johnson and Cassie Feira, stormed to the MHSAA U.P. Division 2 girls golf championship Wednesday at Oak Crest Golf Course.
Johnson and Feira each carded a 96 as the Mountaineers, 421, rolled past runner-up Ironwood, 458, in the five-team tourney.
“The girls came out and played well,” said Coach Donny Bianco, who piloted the Mountaineers to U.P. titles in 2005 (Division 1) and 2004 (Division 2). “Overall, the girls played a very good round.
“I’m very happy for this group of girls. They performed up to their expectations.”
Johnson downed Feira, a sophomore, on the first playoff hole for medalist, but the Mountaineer senior and four-year player was happiest with the team laurels.
“I feel great,” Johnson said. “We really ended well.
“We had a great season, but it was really short (with the weather this spring). When we got outside to the courses, we focused and did really well.”
A nervous Johnson admitted she almost needed help placing the ball on the tee for the playoffs.
“It was really nerve-wracking especially against one of your teammates,” Johnson said. “I just tried to finish strong.
“I could have done better in more areas. I liked most of my drives and putting, but my chipping wasn’t the greatest. I need to work on that more.”
Mountaineer senior Maria Pirkola carded a 114 and sophomore Marti Pirkola had a 115. Senior Sarah Pirkola completed the lineup.
“Katelynn is solid and she’s improved every year,” Bianco said. “She puts some time in and takes her game seriously.
“Cassie’s score is a little better than her average and she’s very capable of shooting that. It all came together on the right day.”
Alyssa Norback of L’Anse totaled a 97 for third behind the Mountaineers.
