Prep baseball: Higbie’s big hit in sixth gives Marquette a split with Norway

MARQUETTE – Brendan Higbie hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning Tuesday to give the Marquette Senior High School baseball team to a 3-2 win over visiting Norway and a split in a doubleheader.

In the first game, the Knights edged MSHS, 3-2.

Norway had taken a 2-1 lead in the fifth in the nightcap before Higbie’s clutch hit.

“We were struggling to get people (in to score) all game long,” Marquette manager Todd Koski said after his team had ended the regular season with an 8-15 record. “Higbie hit his single up the middle on a 1-2 count.

“The kids battled hard and battled through four errors.”

Jake Phillips claimed the mound win in relief; Rahn (no first name available) was tagged with the loss.

In the first game, the Knights scored a run in the sixth to edge the Redmen.

Brandon Lotterman shouldered the loss; Norway’s Vivio (no first name available) went four innings for the pitching win.

Austin Grayvold and Vivio both went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Knights; Gabe Apple hit an RBI-single in the first inning for Marquette.

MSHS will next meet Traverse City West at noon Saturday in Alpena in Division 1 state tournament district competition.
