Korvela, Croley fuel IHS in softball
ISHPEMING – It didn’t take long for the Ishpeming High School girls softball team to defeat visiting Gwinn Friday.
In the continuation of a game halted Wednesday due to bad weather, the Hematites exploded for 19 runs in the second inning to claim a 24-5 triumph stopped by a mercy rule after three innings.
Ishpeming’s Sinead Korvela belted a grand slam and Gabby Croley a two-run triple in the frame after the two teams had entered the bottom half of the inning tied 5-5.
“We got our hits, but we also got a lot of walks,” IHS manager Jeremy Thompson said after his team improved to 8-11 this season.
“(Losing pitcher) Bella Wedig pitched two games Thursday against Negaunee and her arm was tired today.”
Korvela wound up with three hits, six RBIs and four runs scored in the contest. Croley added two triples, three runs and three RBIs, while teammates Lindsey Thompson and Emily Myers chipped in two hits apiece.
Hailly Thompson tossed a two-hitter for the mound victory.
Wedig hit a grand slam Wednesday for Gwinn.
IHS is next scheduled to meet Superior Centrall at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Norway in district tournament play; Gwinn will play Pickford at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Gladstone.
