Prep baseball: Gladstone wins doubleheader over Superior Central

EBEN – After a rough weekend at a tournament in Sault Ste. Marie, Gladstone High School became more stingy on defense Monday night, sweeping to 9-4 and 8-0 baseball victories over Superior Central.

Blake Ballard and Hunter Garling had two hits each in the first game for the Braves (15-8), who gave up 13 runs while dropping two of three games at the Soo on Saturday.

Christian Groleau got the pitching win, striking out five, walking two and allowing six hits.

SC’s Avery Nachtman, who pitched five innings, absorbed the loss. He fanned four, walked four and allowed six runs on seven hits.

“Groleau pitched a good game,” Cougars’ manager Bill Maki said. “We had the lead (3-2) until the fifth inning, then they scored four runs to go ahead.”

In the nightcap, Gladstone’s Luke LaCosse went 4 for 4, Justin Jurek was 2 for 2 and Jake Peterson ripped a pair of doubles.

LaCosse, who pitched the entire contest, fanned one, walked two and scattered four hits.

Cody Maki, who worked the first two innings, took the loss. He whiffed four, walked one and surrendered four runs on seven hits.

“We had opportunities,” Bill Maki said. “We got runners on base in every inning, but they had a couple double plays. Their defense was tight and they played well.”
