Prep track: Negaunee sweeps Westwood Relays
ISHPEMING – Negaunee swept the girls and boys titles at the Westwood Relays on Monday in different ways.
The Miners girls won 10 of the 16 events to easily win the title by 21 points over runner-up Manistique, while the NHS boys were matched by Marquette with six event victories and needed strong second- and third-place showings to beat out the Redmen by nine points.
Regular running events Monday were true relays while hurdles and field events combined two or four teammates totals for a team score. Names weren’t available for any of the teams.
Negaunee accumulated 66 points in the girls meet, winning the 2-by-110-meter and 2-by-300 hurdles; the 4-by-300, 4-by-400, 4-by-800; the sprint medley; the 4-by-100 throwers relay; and the high jump, shot put and discus.
Manistique had 45 points and took five events – the 4-by-100, 4-by-200, distance medley, pole vault and long jump – while Westwood scored 27 and got its lone victory in the 4-by-1,600.
On the boys side, Negaunee finished with 51 points to 42 for Marquette, 36 for Manistique and 15 for Westwood.
The Miners’ half-dozen wins came in the 2-by-110 hurdles, 4-by-100 throwers, pole vault, high jump, shot put and discus.
MSHS’ victories were in the sprint and distance medleys, and the 4-by-200, 4-by-300, 4-by-800 and 4-by-1,600.
Manistique counted first places in the 2-by-300 hurdles, 4-by-100 and 4-by-400, while the host Patriots came out on top in the long jump.
The boys meet had the day’s closest races, with five runs decided by a second or less, including the 4-by-800 by Marquette over Manistique, and Negaunee beating out Marquette by two inches in the high jump.
