Classic ‘Vette grand prize in BBA fundraiser

MARQUETTE – The Bishop Baraga Association is raffling off a Corvette to raise funds to go toward the construction of the new Bishop Baraga Chapel.

The grand prize is a 1993 Ruby Red 40th anniversary Corvette, which was donated by Dr. James Surrell of Marquette.

“I’m such a fan of Bishop Baraga,” Surrell said. “He did so much for the Upper Peninsula and his impact has been so substantial.”

Surrell said he bought the car from the original owner and had it restored, but knew he didn’t need the car. This led to his decision to give it to the church, which he said is for a “great cause.”

Tickets cost $50 and only 1,000 will be sold. They can be purchased at any of the three U.P. Catholic Credit Unions or by calling 228-7080. The drawing will be held June 1. If all of the tickets are not sold, the fundraiser will be changed to a 50/50 cash drawing.

Church officials at St. Peter Cathedral said they hope to complete the chapel project this fall at an estimated cost of $500,000. The chapel will be connected to the cathedral on the courtyard side.
