Johnie N. Gillespie

MARQUETTE, MI. – Johnie N. Gillespie, 76, of Marquette, died Friday morning, May 17, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital.

He was born April 11, 1937, in Ishpeming, a son of the late Hezekiah “Hessie” and Lillian (Monhead) Gillespie.

Johnie served in the US Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He then went to work for British Airways out of New York. He transferred to England and worked for Kaiser Engineering in London for 24 years.

Johnie returned to the United States and resided in Escanaba for five years and then moved to Marquette where he has lived until his death.

He loved his family & friends. His home was filled with pictures of nieces and nephews. He maintained a close relationship with his friends in England and so looked forward to their calls and letters.

He enjoyed having friends and family stop in for coffee and conversation. He was a great talker.

Johnie enjoyed listening to classical music, especially the pipe organ. He was an avid Detroit Tiger fan and also watched professional tennis regularly.

Johnie is survived by three sisters, Ella Hissala of Gwinn, Stella Ark of Texas and Blanche Lantz of Felch, MI; a brother-in-law, William Rae of Watson, MI; and numerous nieces, nephews & cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; special aunt & uncle, Hazel and James “Vernon” Gillespie; four brothers, Herbert, Willis, Theodore “Jack”, and Raymond; and a sister, Victoria “Vicky” Rae.

Johnie will be greatly missed by all. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
