Viitala, Pap named Kiwanis MSHS Athletes of the Month for March
MARQUETTE – Hunter Viitala and Mark Pap have been named the Marquette Senior High School Athletes of the Month for March.
They were feted by members of the Superiorland Kiwanis Club at a breakfast meeting.
A sophomore, Viitala is a member of the Redettes’ varsity basketball team. She played in 22 games this season, averaging 16 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Viitala earned Great Northern Conference Player of the Year honors, was named to the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association All-Class Team and earned all-state honorable mention laurels by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan.
Viitala has been a member of the 2012 US Junior National All Star Team and the BCAM Reaching Higher Program in 2012 and 2013.
She also plays volleyball and runs track. As a freshman, she was a member of the Upper Peninsula Division 1 championship 1,600-meter relay team.
Viitala was also an honorable honorable GNC pick in volleyball
Viitala has been on the MSHS honor roll and carries a 3.3 grade-point average.
She has volunteered at many community events, including Walk-n-Roll, youth basketball camps and Bowl for Kids’ Sake.
After graduation, she hopes to play attend college on an athletic scholarship.
She’s the daughter of Darrin and Theresa Viitala.
A senior, Pap averaged 13 points and 9.5 rebounds with the MSHS boys varsity basketball team this past season.
He was named GNC Player of the Year, a UPSSA Dream Team member and a BCAM Class A Special Mention selection.
Pap has earned Outstanding Academic Achievement awards each semester at MSHS, has been chosen to participate in the Excellence in Education program and currently holds a 4.035 GPA.
He’s the treasurer for the National Honor Society and participates in Business Professionals of America.
As a member of the National Organization for Youth Safety, Pap represented Michigan in Washington, D.C., in January.
He volunteers his time coaching middle school basketball.
He will be attending the University of Michigan to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Pap has been preadmitted into the Ross College of Business there.
He’s the son of John and Susan Pap.
