Prep baseball: Marquette sweeps doubleheader against Superior Central in Eben
EBEN – Marquette Senior High School rallied from a 5-4 deficit to take a 9-8 victory over host Superior Central in the second game of a doubleheader Monday.
In the first game, MSHS won 11-1 in four innings.
Jake Olson went 4-for-4 and knocked in two runs to lead the Redmen (3-10) offensively in the second game. Teammate Luke McAuliffe went 3-for-4, as did Trevor Koski, who plated two runs.
Ian McInnes went 3-for-4 and knocked in two runs for the Cougars. Jake Aho chipped in two safeties and an RBI.
Jake Phillips picked up the mound win in relief. Trevor Maki took the loss.
“(SC’s) kids were hitting the ball all game, but Gabe Apple got the save for us,” MSHS manager Todd Koski said, noting his team has won three straight games.
“With the tying run on second, Matthew Bammert made a nice (defensive) play to get the third out.”
In the first contest, the Redmen produced 10 hits in the mercy-rule game. Olson posted three hits and recorded four RBI. Apple went 3-for-3 and plated two runs.
Flynn hit an RBI-single for the Cougars (3-7).
Brandon Lotterman tossed a three-hitter and struck out five for the pitching triumph. Tyler Kienitz shouldered the loss.
“Our bats came alive (in the first game),” Todd Koski said. “We hit the cover off the ball.”
Despite losing both games, SC manager Bill Maki said the contests were “a lot of fun.”
“We just ran out of pitching,” he said. “We just couldn’t get anything going in the first game.”
