Prep softball: Seibert hurls one-hitter in nightcap as Marquette soars to sweep of Negaunee

MARQUETTE – Morgan Seibert tossed a seven-inning one-hitter to lead the Marquette Senior High School girls softball team to a 2-1 victory over Negaunee on Wednesday and a sweep of a twinbill held at Hurley Field in Marquette.

In the opener, Marquette won, 6-5.

Seibert allowed a bunt single in the top of the seventh inning by Rosalie Anderson. The MSHS hurler struck out eight and walked two.

“Morgan dominated,” MSHS manager Paul Seibert said of his daughter. “She kept them off balance and they didn’t hit the ball hard all game.”

He noted Morgan struck out the side in the first inning on nine pitches and again in the third with 10.

Courtney LaFreniere led the Redettes (11-5) at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a stolen base. Teammates Karlee Huuki and Angela Brown drove in Marquette’s runs.

Anderson took the mound loss. She gave up five hits and two walks while fanning three.

In the first game, LaFreniere went 2-for-4, scored a run and knocked in another. Winning pitcher Senja Liimatta recorded two safeties and scored a run.

Liimatta surrendered nine hits and two walks on the mound while striking out 10.

Paul Seibert said the Miners (10-5) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before Liimatta got a pop up to third and a strikeout to end the game.

Adena Anderson was tagged with the mound loss. She gave up eight hits and four walks while fanning one.

Taylor Ring posted two hits, scored twice and stole two bases for the Miners of manager John Anderson, who were playing their third doubleheader in as many days.

Ashley Anderson added two hits, a run and two stolen bases, while Negaunee teammate Amanda Washnock chipped in a pair of hits, scored a run and plated a run.

“It’s always nice to win two,” manager Seibert said. “Negaunee battles hard.”
