Journal stages second annual event at Holiday Inn in Marquette

MARQUETTE – Pat Jensen had a beautiful smile on her face Wednesday morning, a sign that she was enjoying herself.

Jensen, a Marquette resident, was attending The Mining Journal’s Senior Expo 2013 at the Holiday Inn in Marquette.

“I read about (the expo) in The Mining Journal and decided to come down to see what it’s all about,” Jensen said. “It’s wonderful. I like that I can learn about what’s going on with Medicare and so many other things.”

The expo, in its second year, brought together seniors and a number of agencies and businesses which provide services for them.

The day of activity and information started with a welcome from Journal Publisher Jim Reevs.

“Our best, most loyal group of subscribers are our seniors,” Reevs said. “Thank you for that.”

After some opening jokes – enjoyed by the audience – told by emcee Dr. James Surrell, the program continued with presentations by the Upper Peninsula Commission for Area Progress; ING Financial; Marquette General Hospital; Upper Peninsula Home, Health and Hospice; First National Trust and Wealth Management; Eye Associates; Bell Hospital; and Miracle Ear.

The attendees were also treated to lunch as part of the expo.

In 2012, about 170 free tickets for the event were distributed while this year, the number grew to 225.

“We hope that we will have even more next year,” Reevs said. “We think this will be bigger and better.”

Coordinating the event was Sharon Johnson, The Mining Journal’s classified manager.

“This expo turned out very well,” Johnson said. “Seniors not only got a nice meal, but got to hear some wonderful speakers on interesting topics. It is a very educational expo which helps them in their day-to-day lives.”

Johnson will be putting together plans for the 2014 edition of the expo. Anyone interested in more information can contact her at 906-228-2500 ext. 210.
