ATV trail plan, streetscape project on council agenda

ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming City Council is scheduled to discuss a possible all-terrain-vehicle trail link through the city and the Ishpeming Downtown Development Authority’s streetscape project at its meeting Wednesday.

The council meets 7 p.m. at the Ishpeming Senior Citizens Center.

The council is being asked to support a trail proposal from the Trail Development Group, which is being formed by the Ishpeming City Planning Commission, U.P. North Country ATV group and the Iron Ore Heritage Recreation Authority. The trail would allow access through town for ATVs.

The proposed resolution of support states that the city of Ishpeming would not be responsible for trail development, construction and maintenance cost.

The Trail Development Group has prepared a conceptual route and alignment of various trail segments and is presenting the plan to the council for support.

Also at the meeting, the council is expected to review construction plans for the DDA’s streetscape project. The DDA approved the plans at its March meeting, enabling U.P. Engineers and Architects to go forward with the bidding process for the project.

The project involves reconstruction of Hematite Avenue, putting in sidewalks, landscaping, removing some parking areas and adding other parking, including a parking lot between Main Street and First Street off of Bank Street.

Also on the meeting agenda is discussion of the bids for phase two of the Ishpeming Carnegie Library project, which includes renovations to the lower level of the library.
