SSA Red Bulls U12 shutout all three opponents, take second at Dome tourney

MARQUETTE – Despite blanking all three of its opponents, the SSA Red Bulls U12 squad placed second in the Superior Dome Soccer Tournament April 26-28 in Marquette.

In the championship game, the Red Bulls (6-2-1) played the Green Bay Lightning to a 0-0 draw after 50 minutes of play. Goal keepers Soren Higgins and Nicolaas Vermaat shared the shutout for Marquette.

In a five-player overtime shootout, Green Bay scored on four straight penalty kicks to one by the Red Bulls’ Ethan Martysz to claim the title.

Marquette also edged the defending Dome Tournament champion Howard (Wis.) Hurricanes, 1-0. Ander Sorenson scored for the Red Bulls off a cross pass from Martysz.

Vermaat got the shutout in goal.

In their tourney opener, the Red Bulls blanked the Petoskey Fire, 5-0, behind two markers by Trevor Salmon.

Vermaat, Brendan McCoy and Drew Wyble also scored for Marquette., which took a 4-0 first half lead.

Martysz, Vermaat, Wyble, Theo Kumpula, Shane McEachern and McCoy drew assists.

Higgins and Salmon shared goal keeper duties for the winners, who were aided by the defensive play of Evan Phillips, Hunter Sides, Tylor Thiel-Robinson and Erik Salminen.

The Red Bulls were coached by Dan Salmon and Steve McCoy.
