Save the best for last
SUTTONS BAY – Junior Gabby Gencheff’s late goal didn’t mean much in a 4-1 victory by Marquette, but what it represented was much bigger than just a game at the Suttons Bay Tournament on Saturday.
It won the Redettes girls soccer team their third straight title at this event.
MSHS needed a win, but not just any win, against Leland in their final contest of the tourney. Because of a three-way tie with 2-1 records, Marquette had to win by three goals to capture the tiebreaker and the championship.
And that’s the margin Gencheff made it with about five minutes left, with a little help from the Redettes youthful defense.
“My defense, even though they’re young, were real solid,” Marquette coach Dan LeBert said about freshman Sydney Higgins, sophomore Allie Hillier, junior Stina Jackson and senior Kate Garrow.
The Redettes opened with an 8-0 victory over Suttons Bay, outshooting their hosts 15-1 as MSHS goalie Molly Gaudreau was called on to make just one save.
Sophomores Carleigh Hillier and Makaela Burse scored two goals apiece, while freshman Maddi Rieboldt and sophomores Shelby Ross, Casey Durand and Shayla Huebner each scored once.
Garrow and Alex Hillier had two assists each as MSHS led 5-0 at halftime.
Cadillac then defeated Marquette 1-0 with a late first-half goal despite the Redettes holding a 11-6 shots advantage as Gaudreau made five saves.
“We outplayed and outshot them, but we missed a number of good scoring opportunities,” LeBert said.
In the final game, Burse scored twice and Ross once in addition to Gencheff as Marquette built a 2-0 halftime advantage and finished with a huge 23-2 shots margin as Gaudreau made one stop.
Assists went to Jackson, Higgins, freshman Lexi Guidebeck and junior Riley O’Connor.
Marquette (4-1) plays Kingsford at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The game is scheduled to be played in Kingsford, but if field conditions don’t allow the game to be played there, it will be moved to Marquette, LeBert said.
The Marquette JV team also won a tournament on Saturday at Green Bay, Wis., East, winning all three games including a penalty-kick shootout in the title contest.
