The Y’s Day Camp

MARQUETTE – During the summer months, it can be hard to keep children active and learning new skills. The YMCA is committed to helping parents out by offering summer programs that not only help children stay active, but can also help keep their minds sharp.

The YMCA summer programs start in June and go through August with two different sessions available. They offer programs like day camp, sport camps and art camps to help keep children in a familiar routine that keeps them learning through the summer, said Laura Murawski, senior program development leader at the YMCA of Marquette County.

“The Y’s Day Camp has one primary mission, which is to encourage character growth through caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility,” Murawski said. “Our camp staff is committed to developing these traits through our camp activities.”

According to Murawski, children in the summer programs will learn through fun activities that also help them develop their social skills, independence, leadership skills and positive self identity.

“Keeping kids involved during the summer months is crucial,” Murawski said. “Research shows during the summer month’s children aren’t learning new skills or information; they also have a tendency to forget some of what they already know. Children can avoid the summer learning slide by staying actively engaged.”

There are two summer sessions offered at the YMCA for summer youth programs. The first session begins June 9 and goes through July 20. The second session is July 21 through Aug. 24. Registration opens May 20.
