Fire destroys home near Sand River
SAND RIVER – Investigation is continuing into the cause of a fire that destroyed a home near the Sand River in Alger County Friday morning.
Onota Township Fire Chief Catherine Kimar said firefighters were paged at about 7:10 a.m. Friday and responded with crews from Chocolay and AuTrain townships to the single-story residence located on Military Road, which is situated a short distance south of M-28.
Kimar said the homeowner, her son and a family friend were at home at the time the blaze broke out and all escaped without injury. No injuries were reported to firefighters.
The fire started in the westernmost, front part of the building, Kimar said.
“It’s a complete loss in terms of content,” Kimar said. “The building is still standing but it will have to be demolished.”
Kimar said the name of the homeowner was being withheld until family members could be notified.
Marquette County Rescue Unit 131, the Alger Delta Cooperative Electric Association, Michigan State Police and Alger EMS assisted.
Onota Township firefighters cleared the scene of the fire at about 2 p.m. Friday.
