Prep tennis: Marquette Redmen dominate third sets to down Munising
MARQUETTE – Marquette won all three matches that went to a third set to pull out a 5-3 victory at home over Munising in a high school boys tennis match played Wednesday afternoon.
The Redmen carried three-set victories at No. 3 singles by Justin Flood, No. 1 doubles by Noah Gannon and Alex Shahbazi, and No. 2 doubles by Billy Mullet and Josh Collins while also picking up a forfeit victory at No. 4 singles.
Kyle King was the lone MSHS player to win in straight sets, taking a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Munising’s Jacob Schramm.
Meanwhile, the Mustangs’ Noah Ackerman won a tight match at No. 1 singles, outlasting Marquette’s Josh Downs, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.
“This was our first match this season, so I’m happy that we’ve started this well,” Munising coach Rod Gendron said. “Noah had a very competitive match. He came back from a 4-1 deficit in the second set and showed tremendous composure down the stretch to beat a high-quality opponent.
“We gained knowledge of what we have to work on, and that’s what I’m looking for in an opening match.”
