To the Journal editor:
Senate Bill 288, proposed by state Sen. Tom Casperson, D-?Escanaba, is a shortsighted, dangerous bill that attempts to dismantle part of our democratic process.
Our state constitution was crafted intentionally to allow citizens to accept or reject laws proposed by legislators.
When enough of the people speak by means of a petition to put an issue on the ballot for a vote (as in the public’s prior decision to not allow the hunting of doves,) our democracy functions as the wise framers intended.
Casperson’s SB 288 is an obvious attempt to thwart the process of checks and balances that citizens currently possess.
I urge everyone to call his office at 517-373-7840 and tell him to pull his anti-democracy bill SB 288.
