Hotel fire in Calumet Township investigated

CALUMET – The investigation continues into the cause of a fire at the Trailside Lodge Motel in Calumet Township Wednesday morning.

Departments were dispatched to the fire about 3:40 a.m. The scene was cleared about six hours later.

“Somebody was driving by and had seen it burning,” Calumet Township Fire Chief Pat Boberg said.

The fire was concentrated in the northeast corner of the building. One room was occupied at the time of the fire, but the person was uninjured. In addition to Calumet Township, the Laurium, Calumet, Allouez Township fire departments responded to the scene, as did the American Red Cross and Mercy EMS. The motel remained closed Friday and the building’s manager declined to comment when reached by phone.

The Michigan State Police fire marshal was investigating the blaze.
