Northern Michigan hockey alumni pro update

MARQUETTE – Numerous former Northern Michigan University hockey players are continuing their careers in the pro ranks.

Mark Olver (2007-10), Erik Gustafsson (2007-10) and Mike Santorelli (2004-07) are playing in the NHL. Olver is a forward for the Colorado Avalanche, Gustafsson a defenseman for the Philadelphia Flyers and Santorelli a center for the Winnipeg Jets.

In 31 games played as of Wednesday, Olver (5-10, 170 pounds) had scored four goals, collected two assists and had drawn six penalty minutes, according to hockeyDB.com. He was a minus-5.

Gustafsson (5-10, 180), in 21 games with the Flyers, had scored three goals – two coming in back-to-back games this week on Monday and Tuesday – recorded four assists and had been tagged with one minor penalty. He was a minus-1.

Santorelli (6-0, 190) played four games in Sweden to start the season, posting an assist. He then saw 24 games with the NHL’s Florida Panthers, going 2-1-3 with two penalty minutes.

From there, he played seven games with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL, posting 2-3-5 offensive numbers and a plus-2.

After being picked up by the Jets at the trade deadline, he has recorded an assist in five games and is a minus-1.

Jared Coreau, who tended goal for the Wildcats this past season, is with the Detroit Red Wings. He hasn’t seen any action yet, however.
