Sexual assault, domestic violence prevention is focus of April events

MARQUETTE – Area law enforcement groups recently marked the beginning of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Law enforcement representatives received teal ribbons to put on patrol cars in recognition of their role in sexual violence prevention.

Other area events planned to mark the month include the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes at 6 p.m. Tuesday at NMU’s Bottum University Center.

The Marquette Women’s Center, Public Safety, the Health Promotion’s Office, Women 4 Women and the NMU Cosmetology students at the 10th annual event. The walk kicks off at the University Center in the Great Lakes Rooms. Men are encouraged to attend and wear high heel shoes to express male peer support for sexual assault and domestic abuse awareness by walking in women’s high heels.

Free foot massages will be available after the walk.

The community is welcome to join in the free event, with high heels optional.
