Class B, C competition resumes at NIT

NEGAUNEE – A late game Friday night set the stage for a full slate of contests Saturday in the Charter Negaunee Invitational Basketball Tournament being held at Lakeview Memorial Gym.

In a Class C contest Friday night, Stonehouse of Ishpeming whipped Thrivent Financial of Ishpeming, 93-65.

Aaron Faulkner fired in 31 points and Dane Nelson added 28 for the winners. For Thrivent, Anthony Marietti tossed in 17 points and Gabe Eppert 11.

In Saturday’s opening game, Car Ram Rod of Houghton thumped Juice Promotions of Carney, 101-79, in Class B.

Kyle Smith (33) and Mike Philly (27) combined for 60 points for the Houghton squad; Devin Scott scored 32 points and T.J. Cameron 23 for Juice.

Also in Class B, the Raw Dogs of Gwinn shaded the Milwaukee Spartans, 105-97. Isiah Law netted 23 points and Matt Stoll 22 for the winners; Andrew Davis tossed in 24 points and Marty Collins chipped in 20 for the Spartans.

Former Michigan Tech University star Ali Haidar and Matt Ester netted 20 points apiece to lead U.P. Insurance of Negaunee to a 90-57 Class B triumph over Detroit Express.

Jeff Stiefel and Mike Mickelson scored 16 points apiece for Detroit Express.

Also in Class B, Stonehouse of Ishpeming clubbed Wilson Trucking and Excavating of Prescott, 85-57.

Lou Koski (13) and former Marquette Senior High School and MTU standout Tim Strom (12) combined for 25 points for the winners; Darrin Wilson and John Duke netted 12 points apiece for Wilson.

Later in the day, Raw Dogs of Gwinn stopped Wilson Trucking, 86-78, as Isiah Law netted 21 points and Kyle Aho 19 for the winners. Duke scored 21 and Boyce Bilski 19 for Wilson.

Detroit Express shaded Car Ram Rod, 72-68, as Nick McGuire and Jerry Brown each had 21 for Detroit and Eric Bresette scored 20 and Philly 12 for Car RR.

In Class C, Ishpeming Stonehouse got 26 points from Joey Pontbriand and 23 from Tony Jandron in a 90-83 overtime victory over IQ Designs of Manistique.

Steve Kaiser banked in 27 points and Kyle Tiglas 12 for the Manistique squad.

In a Class C affair, Juice Promotions of Carney got 26 points from Ben Kitkowski and 20 from Justin Bloniz to beat Shirt Tails of Iron Mountain, 91-79. Rich Poma tossed in 21 points and Nick Mattson 15 for Shirt Tails.

In Class B, Stonehouse of Ishpeming turned back McNeil’s Oilers of Crystal Falls, 99-82, behind 21 points by Josh Buettner and 18 from Strom.

For the Oilers, Terry Clement netted 25 points and Eric Leamen 22.

U.P. Insurance of Negaunee knocked off U.P. Propane of Negaunee, 89-61. T.J. Brown dumped in 21 points and Ester 17 for the winners; Caleb Harrington scored 18 points and Tanner Uren 15 for U.P. Propane.

Tourney play will resume at 9:30 a.m. today at Lakeview.
