Portage Health Apothecary wins NIT’s Class DD title

NEGAUNEE – Brad Waters scored a game-high 19 points, but it wasn’t enough for Sodergren’s Septic of Ishpeming in a 70-54 loss to Portage Health Apothecary of the Copper Country in the Negaunee Invitational Basketball Tournament Class DD Championship played Thursday at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium in Negaunee.

Griffin Lawson scored 13 points for Sodergren’s while PHA was led by Steve Mattson’s 15 points and Jason Carter’s 12.

Carter was named the NIT Class DD most valuable player and joined on the Class DD all-tournament by teammates Mattson and Jason Koski.

Waters and Lawson represented Sodergren’s on the all-tournament team with Brent Zabrowski of LoyalTees of Marquette and Ryan Barron of Derouin’s Auto Body of Escanaba also being selected.

In earlier action on Thursday, 41 Steakhouse of Ishpeming and Steward and Sheridan of Ishpeming both advanced to Monday’s 8:15 p.m. Class EE championship match.

41 Steakhouse defeated Meyer Family Vision of Ishpeming, 69-67, in the first Class EE semifinal via 25 points by Jesse Perry and 22 points from Matt Frisk.

For Meyer, Travis Smith had 23 points while Todd Saunders had 18 points.

Steward and Sheridan scored a 97-81 win over E.Q. Muffler of Marquette behind 35 points by Tyler Mercier and 14 points by James Daniels.

Matt Treado of E.Q. nearly matched Mercier with 34 points and Steve Willis posted 17 points.

Classes B and C take over Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium this weekend starting today at 4 p.m. when Sager Inc/Tino’s of Marquette open Class C play against Juice Promotions-C of Carney.

Class B begins with Stonehouse-B of Ishpeming against Car Ram Rod of Houghton at 5:15 p.m.

The last game tonight is scheduled for 10 p.m. with play resuming on at 8 a.m. on Saturday and 9:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The Class C championship is at 5 p.m. on Sunday with the Class B final at 7:45 p.m. on Sunday.
