To the Journal editor:
I would personally like to thank Marqette Fire Department Capt. Steve Hodgins and the entire Marquette firefighting crew for their handling of the recent Upper Peninsula Medical Center fire.
Their quick and decisive actions saved millions of dollars in destruction and avoided significant disruption of medical services to the community.
They contained the fire to a relatively small area of the basement with the rest of the building only affected by smoke. Capt. Hodgins kept us all informed throughout the morning.
When I saw the firefighters coming out of the smoke-filled basement covered with ash and sweat, the seriousness of the situation was obvious.
They had put their lives on the line to keep the fire under control. For that we all owe them a heart-felt thank you.
