Celaya wins twice for Northern Michigan track and field team at Wisconsin-Oshkosh
OSHKOSH, Wis. – Junior Mallory Celaya won two events to help the Northern Michigan University women’s outdoor track and field team finish third in a six-team field at the Wisconsin-Oshkosh Open on Saturday.
Winona State (Minn.) won with 221 points, followed by UW-Oshkosh with 192, NMU 106, Lawrence (Wis.) University 28, Ripon (Wis.) College 28 and Michigan Tech 12.
Celaya led a dominating Wildcats’ performance in the 5,000-meter run as NMU had six of the top 10 finishers. Celaya won the event in 18 minutes, 50.84 seconds, while sophomore teammate Olivia Howard was second, sophomore Emily Allen fifth, senior Rita Woitas sixth, junior Evelyne Ruiz seventh and junior Brittany Loomis ninth.
Celaya also won the 3,000 steeplechase in 12:30.28 as Ruiz was second.
Northern picked up one other win by sophomore Brittni Wirtz in the 100 in 12.46 seconds. She was also second in the 200 in 26.50 as freshman teammate Avadon James was third, junior Sydney Schultz eighth and senior Brooke Granquist ninth.
Senior Colby West came in third in the 400 in 1:00.47 while Schultz was fourth and James seventh.
In field events, senior Mariah Beaman was runner-up in the javelin in 116 feet, 5 inches, with Granquist seventh, while junior Cheyenne Stewart was third in the long jump (16-10.5) and fourth in the triple jump.
Granquist was also fourth in the 100 hurdles and fifth in the high jump.
Junior Katie Granquist was fifth in the 800 and ran a leg on Northern’s third-place 1,600 relay along with freshman Jaylee Brown, junior Elizabeth Simak and sophomore Catherine Swiderski.
Other top-10 finishes were turned in by junior Chelsea Farquhar, sixth in the 1,500, and freshman Megan Strait, seventh in the discus.
Northern travels to the Lower Peninsula on Saturday to compete in the Hillsdale Invitational.
