Moving is an adventure in subletting
It’s that time of the year again. Time for me to start boxing things up and moving – for the ninth time in the six years I’ve been in Marquette.
This time around, though, there was one difference that made it a little more stressful.
In all of my many moves:? moving here, moving home for the summer, moving back up here and moving to many different places around campus and around Marquette, I never once had to find someone to sublease. This year I’ll have two months remaining on my lease at my current house when I move to my new place.
Finding someone to sublet to has been a lot harder than I thought it would be. I posted on various sites back in February but I didn’t get a response until recently. I know that doesn’t seem like such a long wait but, as it got closer and closer to May, I was getting more and more worried that I was going to have to pay two rents – which no one wants to do.
The other difficulty with finding a sublessee is finding someone who would be compatible with my current roommates. I signed the lease saying I would be their roommate and I feel obligated to make sure that the person who signs the sublease is someone who won’t make them feel uncomfortable in their own home.
Yes, it would be easy to just have the first person who responds sign the papers – but I feel like I can’t do that.
Unfortunately, none of my close friends responded to my post, so I have to go with my gut feeling based on the 10 to 20 minutes I spend with the person while showing them the house. I don’t know how people can do this on a regular basis. I?have one roommate who does it every summer. I also wish that every lease started and ended around the same time. I know that will never happen, so I hope the next time I move it will be at the end of the lease.
I also hope that this will be the last time I have to move while I’m in Marquette because I really do dislike moving.
