Finals set in Class DD of NIT

NEGAUNEE – Sodergren Septic of Ishpeming will square off against Portage Health Apothecary at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 for the Class DD title of the Negaunee Invitational Basketball Tournament at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium after scoring semifinals victories on Thursday of this week.

Five players scored in double figures as Sodergren Septic topped Derouins Auto Body of Escanaba, 97-83, in the evening’s first semifinal.

Matt Korpi led the victors with 23 points while teammate Brandon Lawson finished with 20. For Derouins, Ryan Barron had 22 points and Carl Branstrom scored 18.

In the second semifinal, Portage Health’s Mark Nolan hit a deep 3-pointer with two seconds remaining to give his team a 61-60 win over LoyalTees of Marquette.

Steve Mattson finished with 19 points for Portage Health while teammate Jason Carter posted 17 points and Jason Koski had 15. For LoyalTees, Brent Zabrowski finished with 17 points and Brian Reynolds pitched in 10.

Tonight, play gets underway in the women’s Class B bracket at 6 p.m., as well as in the 45-and-older division at 7:15 p.m. Both brackets, plus the women’s Class A tournament, run through Sunday at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium with play beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
