Medical center fire location pinpointed
ISHPEMING – The location where a fire started that forced evacuation of the Upper Peninsula Medical Center in Marquette on Thursday has been determined.
Marquette City Fire Department Chief Tom Belt said the fire started in a records storage area of the center’s basement. The room was full of paper records stored on metal racks.
Belt said the cause has not been determined and remains under investigation.
The fire department responded to a call at about 7:50 a.m. and the building at 1414 W. Fair Ave. was evacuated. Upon arrival, firefighters spotted light smoke on the west side of the building and the source of the smoke was found to be on the basement level.
According to the fire department, two sprinkler heads were activated due to hot conditions in the room.
Firefighters were able to enter the room, extinguish the blaze and remove the smoke from the building with ventilators.
Several of the center’s offices and clinics remained closed until noon Thursday, while others were closed until Friday morning.
