Mercier leads Steward and Sheridan in tight NIT win
NEGAUNEE – Tyler Mercier posted a game-high 33 points at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium on Monday to lead Steward and Sheridan of Ishpeming to a tight 62-61 victory over Casa Calabria of Marquette in Class EE quarterfinal action of the Negaunee Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Cody Whitens added 13 points for Steward and Sheridan while Brian Meyers and Pete Elenbaus had 17 and 14 points, respectively, for the Casa.
In the only other game Monday, Martin’s Sports of Gwinn topped Steeno’s Bar of Niagara, Wis., 87-76, in a Class D quarterfinal.
The two leading scorers came from Steeno’s, with John Swanson scoring 28 points and Jeff McLean totaling 21.
For Martin’s, Francis Pleaugh scored 17 points and Nathan Wascher had 16.
Three NIT Class E quarterfinal contests are on the docket tonight at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium starting at 6 p.m. with the last game scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m.
