System does work
To the Journal editor:
Thank you so much to state Rep. John Kivela, D-Marquette, and state Rep. Scott Dianda, D-Calumet, for meeting with the community March 15, at Babycakes Muffin Co.! I attended to share with Rep. Kivela the interest of community members to join efforts to overturn Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.
I, then, learned of the legislation introduced by Rep. Dianda on ethics, accountability and transparency which, if passed, would be an excellent start in the right direction.
It is interesting that many people questioned the cause or message of the Occupy movement due to the many different issues mentioned on the signage! The common denominator of all the issues is money in politics!
Health care, environmental issues, unemployment, food security and poverty are all exacerbated by the corporations and moneyed interests funneling money into the campaigns of those who support their agendas. Corporate Personhood and the effects of Citizens United need to be abolished, overturned, amended.
I am familiar with the argument of Republican v. Democrat, but I am also familiar with the quote “Government of the people, for the people and by the people” and, Republican or Democrat, the people are not being heard! Partly because not enough of us are speaking up for ourselves. We need to stop complaining and take some responsibility for the changes we want to see!
I love the sign, “The power of the people is stronger than the people in power” or at least it can be but only if the people acknowledge and assume that power. You may have heard “the squeaky wheel gets the oil.” It does not have to be hard to be heard. Get to know the decision makers in your local, city government as well as your state Reps and Senators.
Take opportunities to speak with them in person. Representatives Kivela and Dianda were at Babycakes, willing and available to speak face-to-face with constituents! Some are not as easily accessible, and it is not only our right but our duty to remind them of their job of representing us and not just the moneyed corporate interests.
There may be no big elections soon but laws are being passed everyday that effect you. If you are waiting for a written invitation to take part in the restoration of what used to be considered the greatest country in the world, this is it!
