Laina E. Mantyla
NEGAUNEE, MI. – Laina Elina Mantyla, age 87, of 98 Croix St. Apt #133, Negaunee passed away Thursday March 28th 2013 under the loving care of her family and the Marquette County Medical Care Facility after a brief illness.
Laina was born April 1, 1925 in Negaunee, Michigan, the daughter of the late Consta and Elma (Annelin) Johnson. She attended Negaunee Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1942. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Laina worked several secretarial positions throughout the years with the latest being at Robbins Flooring Mill in Ishpeming retiring in 1988 after 15 years of service.
Laina was a lifelong area resident and a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She was a talented artist and her family will forever treasure the paintings she created. She loved playing the piano and organ, doing puzzles and reading. Laina formed many friendships because of her gentle nature and ability to listen. She always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met.
Laina is survived by three sons – Larry (Beverly) Mantyla of Winona, MN, Greg (Mary) Mantyla of Gwinn and Alan Mantyla of Ishpeming; three daughters – Nancy (John) O’Neill of Ishpeming, Sharon (Edwin) Villeneuve of Ishpeming and Susan (Ron) Reynolds of Ishpeming; twelve grandchildren – Stephanie (Dario) Hernandez, Cory (Tara) Eman, William Eman Jr., Amy Villeneuve-Jenkins, Jennie (Jaime) Scott, Pamela Thorne, Jocelyn Atkinson, Zachary Mantyla, Jacqueline (Brad) Solomon, Andrea Reynolds, Rachel Mantyla and Shane Marietti; thirteen great grandchildren – Alani Hernandez, Shelby Oleksy, Aubree (Brandon) Smith, Maggie Beaudry, Maddie Beaudry, Parker Scott, Zachary Thorne, Chloe Atkinson, Blake Atkinson, Dylan Solomon, Tyler Solomon, Skyler Mantyla and Zachary Marietti, two great great grandchildren – Kayden and Kylie Smith along with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence “Jello” Mantyla in 2002 and her sister and brother-in-law Miriam & Paul Aho.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 pm on Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Interment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 4-6 pm on Monday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. A luncheon will follow the service at the Bethel Lutheran Church.
