MUNISING, Mich. – Carol Smathers, 82, of Munising, MI passed away on March 20, 2013 in hospice care in Cumming, GA. She was born July 16, 1930, to Vernon and Margaret Floria. She graduated in 1948 from Mather High School in Munising, MI and attended Albion College in Albion, MI, for 2 years before her marriage to Harry Smathers on September 22, 1951. Carol was a very social, outgoing woman who greatly enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and being a founding member of the Bay Babes Red Hats. She was very active in her church, serving on various committees, helping to organize the annual bazaar, and as president of Church Women United. For several years she enjoyed volunteering at the Alger County Historical Society by helping with the displays. Her hobbies included baking, knitting, sewing and gardening. Carol was a very positive and upbeat person who always saw the silver lining and not the cloud. She had a quick wit, a readiness to lend a hand, and an uncanny ability to accept, with grace, whatever came her way. Her bright smile and hospitable ways will be missed by all who knew her.
