Mercier’s 30 points pace Steward and Sheridan to Class EE victory in NIT
NEGAUNEE – Tyler Mercier posted 30 points to lead all scorers on Thursday night at the Negaunee Invitational Basketball Tournament while teammates James Daniels and Cody Whitens each had 15 points for Steward and Sheridan of Ishpeming in a 85-74 victory over Superior Shooters of Marquette in Class EE action at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium.
Mike Bennett had 21 points and Jake Taylor totaled 17 for Shooters.
Joining Steward and Sheridan in the Class EE quarterfinals will be North Oak Manufacturing of Negaunee, which posted a 100-56 win over Jubilee Foods of Ishpeming.
Jeremy Nelson had 29 points for North Oak and teammate Jeff Martin had 22. For Jubilee Foods, Scott Racine scored 17 points and Jake Dodge had 12.
In the nightcap, Steeno’s Bar of Niagara, Wis., defeated U.P. Insurance of Negaunee, 58-41, in Class D behind 17 points from John Swanson. Ross Casanova had 12 points as well for Steeno’s Bar.
Andrew Katona had 10 points and Anthony Zampese scored eight for U.P Insurance.
Class D play resumes tonight in the NIT with A&F Construction of Ishpeming squaring off against DSS Contracting of Marquette at 6 p.m. at Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium.
In Class EE, Tino’s Bar of Ishpeming faces Richmond/Hoy of Marquette at 7:15 p.m. and at 8:15 p.m. in Class E, Venice of Ishpeming meets Crossfit 906 of West Marquette County.
NIT play begins on Saturday at 10 a.m., and includes Class D and EE quarterfinals starting at 3 p.m. at Lakeview.
