All-U.P. Girls Basketball: Forest Park’s Lexi Gussert has dream season, named top player in Class D

MARQUETTE – Lexi Gussert of Forest Park turned in a prep basketball season most Upper Peninsula girls can only dream about.

Wednesday at the annual Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association meeting at Northern Michigan University, the 6-0 junior added to her 2012-13 accomplishments.

Gussert picked up Class D Player of the Year honors for the second straight season by a 21-2 decision over Kelley Wright of St. Ignace.

The Michigan Associated Press Class D Player of the Year, Gussert scored 809 points for a 32.5 average for the Trojans.

The Skyline Conference Player of the Year also averaged 11 rebounds, five assists, four steals and three blocks a game.

Gussert, reportedly being courted by Michigan State, Tennessee and Connecticut, among others, sank 93 3-point shots, nailed 82 percent of her free throws and now has 1,891 career points.

Wright also turned in a banner season. The 5-10 junior tossed in 402 points (20.1) to run her career total to date at 1,122 for the Saints, who went 27-0 and captured the state Class C championship.

In one game this season, Wright – the Straits Area Conference Most Valuable Player – canned nine 3-point shots.

In Class ABC, Elisa Jurmu of Houghton earned top UPSSA honors. She gained 21 votes to two for Marquette Senior High School’s Hunter Viitala.

Jurmu averaged 19.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and two steals en route to being named the WestPac Co-Player of the Year.

She buried 74 percent of her free throw tries and 54 percent of her field goal attempts.

Viitala tossed in 337 points during the regular season for a 16.9 norm. She sank 61 percent of her two-point shots and 32 percent of her shots from beyond the arc.

“With numbers alone, Hunter definitely earned (Great Northern Conference) Player of the Year honors,” MSHS coach Ben Smith said. “But if you were in the gym every day, you’d see that she made a lot of plays.”
