Ishpeming DDA plans to sell former Penney site

ISHPEMING – The Ishpeming Downtown Development Authority decided at its meeting Monday to move forward with the sale of the former J.C. Penney lot.

The J.C. Penney building was demolished in April 2011 after the DDA purchased it the fall before. At the last DDA meeting it was recommended that Ishpeming City Manager Jered Ottenwess look into appraisal options for the lot. According to Ottenwess, the DDA didn’t pursue any of the appraisal options and decided instead to move forward with a purchase agreement for $10,000 for the property with adjacent property owners.

“They (DDA members) want this to be a priority issue, so they are hoping to hold a special meeting before their next regular meeting in April to approve the agreement,” Ottenwess said. “It just all depends on how quickly the contract can be completed.”

The DDA also approved the plans for the city’s planned streetscape construction and directed U.P. Engineers and Architects to move forward with the bidding process for the work.

Also at the meeting, the DDA discussed options for paving Malton Road. After discussion, the DDA decided to table the paving options to give the panel more time to review them and the rest of the DDA’s pending bond projects.
