U19 girls place second in states

MARQUETTE – A 3-2 loss to the Keweenaw Storm March 10 in Dearborn in state Tier II tournament play left the Marquette Sentinels U19 girls hockey team with a runner-up finish.

Montana Viitala and Hayley Boroughf scored for a quick 2-0 lead for coach Jeff Cornock’s Sentinels, but the Marquette squad fell prey to a Storm rally. Brock Nelsen and Necia Lessard drew assists.

On March 9, the Marquette skaters blanked the Mt. Clemens Wolves, 6-0, for goaltender Carley Maanika’s second shutout in round robin play. B. Nelsen, Viitala and Carlson scored twice for the Sentinels. Drawing helpers were Carlson, Sydney Cornock, Sydney Higgins, Kirsten Iwanski, Sam Nelson, Boroughf and B. Nelsen.

On March 8, Maanika posted her first shutout of the tourney in a 5-0 Sentinels’ victory over the Michigan Ice Dogs.

B. Nelsen, Higgins, Viitala and Carlson (2) dented the twine for the winners, with Cornock, Viitala, Emma Kaznowski and Boroughf picking up assists.

Marquette opened its tourney play with a 4-1 loss to the Storm, which beat the Sentinels 1-0 in the 2012 state title game. Carlson posted an unassisted goal in the third period to make it 4-1, but that ended the scoring.
