Fundraiser set for local cancer patient

MARQUETTE – Area residents are encouraged to come out for a bake sale fund-raiser for Karen ‘Boots’ Oster-meyer, who is battling breast cancer.

Ostermeyer, whose cancer has been in remission for the past six years, was first diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 38 years old. But when her pelvic broke two weeks ago, doctors were able to determine that the cancer had resurfaced in her bone, on a rib and possibly in her lymph node system.

“It kind of took her aback, but she’s handling it as well as she can,” said Jeri Brisson, a close friend of Ostermeyer’s.

Brisson said she met Ostermeyer 10 years ago when they worked together at Pediatric Specialists in Marquette.

“Karen is a loving, generous person with a very big heart,” Brisson said. “She is always the first person to help those in need.”

All proceeds of the bake sale will go toward living expenses and medical costs for Ostermeyer, who is healing from her pelvis injury in a nursing home. Within the next eight weeks following recovery from the broken pelvis, she will begin chemotherapy.

A silent auction will also be held during the bake sale, as many local businesses have donated toward the cause.

The fundraiser will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the lobby of the Upper Peninsula Medical Center at 1414 W. Fair Ave. in Marquette. It is being sponsored by Pediatric Specialists and Ostermeyer’s Chub Club members.
