Donald Raymond Lukkari
ISHPEMING, Mich. – Donald Raymond Lukkari, 81, longtime Ishpeming resident, passed away Thursday evening at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.
Born May 30, 1931, in National Mine the son of Erkki and Ali (Helsten) Lukkari he was a graduate of National Mine High School class of 1949. Joining the Air Force ROTC program he was a graduate of Michigan Technological University receiving a degree in Mining Engineering in 1953. Serving with the United States Air Force from 1953-1957, he was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant.
Donald married the former Grace Polozolo March 30,1957, at St John’s Catholic Church. He then took a position with Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company as a geologist, retiring in 1986 after 31 years of service. A past Exalted Ruler of the Ishpeming Elks Club, he was also a longtime member of the Wawonowin Golf Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; 3 sons, Gary (Susan Wood) Lukkari of Spring Lake, Michigan, Daniel (Lisa) Lukkari of Reno, Nevada, and Duane (Kim) Lukkari of Ottawa, Ill; 2 daughters, Linda (Robert) Dimmick of Randolf Center, Vermont, and Teresa Trewhella of Houghton; 2 sisters, Doris Nault and Carol Jean Lawrence, both of Green Bay; 12 grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews who also survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceeded in death by a sister Evelyn Racine and 2 brothers-in-law, Bernard Nault and Ronald Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held Monday March 18, 2013, at 11:00 AM at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Lauri Maki to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. The Racine Funeral Chapel is assisting the family.
