Diocese’s farewell to Sample set for Sunday

MARQUETTE – A farewell Mass and reception is being held Sunday for former Bishop Alexander K. Sample of the Catholic Diocese of Marquette.

The diocese is inviting the community to attend a celebration in saying goodbye to Sample as he prepares to leave the Diocese of Marquette for the Archdiocese of Portland, Ore. Sample was appointed archbishop in Portland by the Vatican on Jan. 29.

Archbishop-elect Sample, 52, will be installed in his new position on April 2 and will succeed Archbishop John Vlazny, who is retiring. Sample will remain as administrator of the Diocese of Marquette until that time.

When Sample, who was born in Kalispell, Mont., took over as Bishop of Marquette – a post he has held for seven years – he was the youngest bishop in the U.S.

The Diocese of Marquette encompasses the entire Upper Peninsula.

The Archdiocese of Portland is home to more than 415,000 Catholics and 124 parishes, as well as 40 elementary schools, 10 high schools, two universities, a seminary and 10 hospitals.

After Sample’s departure, the Diocesan College of Consultors will select a new diocesan administrator who will serve the Diocese of Marquette until a new bishop or an apostolic administrator is named by the Pope.

The public farewell will begin with Mass at 3 p.m. at the St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette, followed by a light reception in the Cathedral Hall.
