GLADSTONE, MI. – Arvo Huttula, age 92, of 19 Parkway Drive, Gladstone (formerly of Rock), passed away Friday March 8, 2013 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he currently was residing.
Arvo was born May 2, 1920 in Rock, MI to Finnish immigrants August and Marie (Karvonen) Huttlula. He was raised in Rock and attended the North Rock School. Arvo worked on the family farm in Rock and the CCC’s prior to serving his country during WW II in the U.S. Army. Arvo was stationed in the Philippines where he was a tank driver. Upon his honorable discharge, Arvo returned to Rock where he worked for the Snowden Construction Company. Arvo was united in marriage to the former Thelma Maki on June 24, 1950 in Gwinn. They resided in Rock until 1987 When Arvo retired and they moved to Gladstone. Thelma preceded Arvo in death on January 23, 2010.
Arvo loved working in the woods and in the garden. He loved dancing and Thelma and Arvo would travel the U.P. attending dances, especially Polka dances. He also enjoyed camping and picking blueberries and raspberries.
Survivors include: Nieces and Nephews: Raymond James (Linda) Maki of Rock, Larry (Diane) Maki of Winneconne, WI., Lloyd (Jean) Swayer of Cooks, Anne (Elmer) Johnson of Oshkosh, WI., Joe (Colleen Brook) Maki of Gladstone, Todd (Karen) Maki of Escanaba, Raymond Mitchell of Germany, Patrick Mitchell of Muskegon, MI., Rodney Mitchell of Muskegon, MI.
In addition to his parents and wife, Thelma, Arvo was preceded in death by his brothers, August, Paul, and Arthur, sisters, Mamie, Elsie and Bertha.
Arvo’s family will receive friends on Wednesday March 13, 2013 from 2:00 to 3:45 PM at the Skradski Funeral Home in Gladstone. Military rites conducted by the Gladstone American Legion Post #71 will follow at 3:45 PM. Funeral services celebrating the life of Arvo Huttula will follow at 4:00 PM with Rev. Stephen Gauger of the Calvary Lutheran Church officiating.
Burial will be at the Fernwood Cemetery in Gladstone. The Skradski Family Funeral Homes of Escanaba and Gladstone are assisting the Huttula family.
