Manistique advances in boys MHSAA Class C district via big third quarter

MANISTIQUE – Connor Selling and the Manistique Emeralds were down 30-24 at halftime of their MHSAA Class C district opener on their home court against an upstart Indian River Inland Lakes team Monday night.

It took their highest scoring quarter of the year, but the Emeralds came storming back in the second half and ran way with a 73-52 victory to advance to the district title game Friday night.

“We played our best second-half of the year and our third quarter was our best scoring quarter of the year,” said Emeralds coach Todd Kangas of his team’s 27-point third quarter.

“We tried to put out a little more pressure after halftime and they didn’t handle it well. We went on a 12-0 run right off the start, got a few steals, hit some shots and everything started clicking from there.”

Selling led the Emeralds with a career-high 31 points. Tyler Kangas scored 18 and Zack Lambert added 11 points with four steals. Coby Ryan had seven rebounds to go with his six points.

“Selling had a real nice game, both inside and outside, he was able to get to the basket,” said coach Kangas. “He was also able to step out and get some open shots out there.”

The Emeralds were 24-of-45 from the field and 3-of-7 from the 3-point arc.

They will face Harbor Springs in the district title game. The Swordsmen defeated Newberry 62-41 Monday night.
