Stielstra scratched from the Iditarod

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Veteran musher Ed Stielstra has scratched from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Race officials said Stielstra of Macmillan in County was injured training his dog team in late February. Race officials said he decided to scratch then but wanted to fulfill his duties during the race’s ceremonial start Saturday.

Stielstra and his wife, Tasha, own and run Nature’s Kennel Sled Dog Adventures and Iditarod Racing Team in McMillan.

Stielstra was the 2008 U.P. 200 Sled Dog Race champion.

The Stielstras are members of the Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association.

He scratched Saturday afternoon at the Campbell Airstrip in Anchorage.

Stielstra has finished the Iditarod seven times, including 25th place last year. He also finished in the top 30 two other years.

His Iditarod winnings total just under $15,000.
